The 12-step DRE protocol is as follows:
To become a DRE, applicants must meet certain requirements. A DRE must be proficient in analyzing the different chemical reactions resulting from drugs. The selection process includes a detailed interview with the arresting officer and a standardized questionnaire. The DRE must be able to recognize the various symptoms associated with the substance of choice, as well as the category it belongs to. A DRE will also be trained to recognize the presence of certain drug classes.
